This competition was open to anyone who works, lives, studies or plays in the City of Whitehorse.
An exhibition of all entries was held at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre from 26 March - 3 April 2011 and prizes were be awarded at the Whitehorse Sustainability Awards on Thursday 31 March held at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre.
Artwork should now be collected from the Box Hill Community Arts Centre.
Artwork should be collected no later than Friday 8th April 2011.

SUSTAINABILITY MESSAGE: In a world of ever diminishing resources much value somehow remains placed on the shiny and new. For those who care to explore below the surface of existing materials, such as discarded and weathered timber, with its physical and embodied history, true inner beauty awaits.

SUMMARY OF MATERIALS USED:
Various plastics, wood, metal and an old sock.
SUSTAINABILITY MESSAGE: Last year, 2270 cubic metres of rubbish was removed from the Yarra River. Rubbish blown from shopping centres and school grounds are among the major concerns. Most of the rubbish items from urban areas that are washed into our waterways comprises of fast food containers, plastic bags and cigarette butts.

SUMMARY OF MATERIALS USED: Discarded rubber, plastic, broken toys and furniture retrieved from our neighbourhood.
SUSTAINABILITY MESSAGE: Living in a society so heavily dependent on continual acquisition and disposal, we often fail to appreciate that music and enjoyment can be found in the simplest of objects.

Anna & Lucy Wallace - The Dream Reader
SUMMARY OF MATERIALS USED: Recycled felt, shoe box, beads from old necklaces, paperclips, old Christmas decorations, packing material old silk and nylon floral decorations, teeth cleaners.
SUSTAINABILITY MESSAGE: This dream reader recycles her books and lets her imagination turn them into dreams. Let your imagination run wild and dream big. Have fun reusing and reinventing. Create characters, themes and new worlds. Lighten your carbon footprint by educating young ones to rethink how we recycle. Throw away objects are art materials. You can have so much fun and connect with one another. As a 75 yr. old I have never bought art materials. I taught for 30 yrs using this philosophy. My grand daughter will continue to save the planet.
Children's Competition:

SUMMARY OF MATERIALS USED: Glass bottle, golf ball, wallet, locks, and mini bowling pins.
SUSTAINABILITY MESSAGE: You should think twice before throwing something out - they could be useful to someone else and can be turned into art work. I was about to chuck out the glass bottle but then I saw how it could be used as a rocket and I no longer saw it as a glass bottle but as a work of art.
School Competition - $200 voucher to spend on environmental or sustainability initiative

Shampoo bottles, string, garden twine, balloons, bottle lids feathers, blacks sponge, paint, cellophane, tissue paper, foil, wood. SUSTAINABILITY MESSAGE:
The Community of Whitehorse is being overwhelmed with pollution and rubbish. Cars clog the air with terrible fumes and the bins are overflowing with rubbish in parks. People should ride their bikes and walk more. We think all kids should involve themselves with planting, walking, reuse, relive and recycling.
