A groundswell of community support, for a venue devoted to housing arts and craft activity in Box Hill during the 1980s, resulted in Council granting a building to the creative community.  The outdated and recently vacated Box Hill Electricity depot acted as a community arts venue from 1987 until a new purpose-built design by Gregory Burgess Architects was completed and opened in October 1990.

Since opening, Box Hill Community Arts Centre has become a focus for cultural activity within the City of Whitehorse, winning architectural and lifestyle awards in the process.

Innovative architectural firm Gregory Burgess Pty Ltd designed the building and the sensitive environmental design was the result of a collaboration between Kevin Taylor and Kate Cullity. Both designers worked closely with artists and potential users to produce a genuine community effort. A busy facility today is testament to the foresight of the original designers.

The Centre offers a wide range of services, including activities for adults and children during school term, and a wide range of art/craft activities during the school holidays. Also on offer to the community, are rooms for hire for regular or casual use.
