From 2005 to 2015 Box Hill Community Arts Centre was an active participant in the Cancer Council’s Annual Fundraiser The Biggest Morning Tea. Each year the office staff came up with a different theme to base the morning tea around and to make the event interesting and fun for participants. At these morning teas an auction would be held to raise additional funds on top of the gold coin entrance fee. The goods to be auctioned came from donations from local businesses, user groups and art work and ceramics made by the Centre’s talented tutors. One successful auction in 2012 was based around the sale of a large, varied and sometime quirky collection of salt and pepper shakers that the Centre Coordinator Jenni Granger picked up from Abbey’s Auctions.
In addition to auctions and themed events in which the staff dressed up in costumes sponsored by Lombards in Nunawading, these morning teas included entertainment and art demonstrations. One year the Alcove Art shop conducted craft demonstrations and from 2010 members from the very popular Box Hill Community Arts Centre Choir would perform a selection of their favourite pieces.
These morning teas were successful for many years and often raised over $1000 for the Cancer Council. The decision to discontinue was sadly made due to the large amount of work generated by the event. In view of the Centre’s continuing growth the staff no longer had sufficient time to plan and organise the morning tea.
